WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS This wine stands as a notable gem among the Castello Romitorio collection. The vineyards are cultivated in generous soil situated at the bottom of an ancient Etruscan village called “Ghiaccioforte.” The grapes utilized in the Morellino are a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. A nose of fresh fruits, with distinct notes of plum. HARVEST A stellar vintage for the entire Tuscan region. Warm temperatures and a dry late summer helped to fully ripen this powerful fruit. HISTORY Castello Romitorio recently acquired an estate in the L’Aquilaia region of Scansano. The estate, named “Giaccio Forte” after an ancient Etruscan city whose ruins lie meters from the vineyard’s cantina, occupies an imposing hill overlooking the valleys and sea. Twleve hectares of vineyards have been planted, and although much smaller than the Montalcino estate with its vast forests, Ghiacco Forte remains a stunning location. Scansano, founded at the time of the Etruscans, developed in the middle ages into an important civic center. It is recognized around the world for its Morellino di Scansano wine, although that name was given rather recently. The area, notable for its unspoiled nature and arid hills, lies 150 meters above sea level only 20 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The combination of altitude, southwestern exposure, rich volcanic soil and the nearby Fiume Albegna, which flows from the sulfuric springs of Saturnia, create in Scansano one of Italy’s most unique microclimates.
